Health Policy Project Recognizes Jamaican HIV Activist Ainsley Reid for Dedicated Contributions to the Prevention of Stigma and Discrimination against People with HIV

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Ainsley Reid, national response coordinator for the Greater Involvement of People living with AIDS (GIPA) National Capacity Building Program, a group supported by the USAID-funded Health Policy Project (HPP), was awarded the badge of honour for meritorial service for his work preventing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV in Jamaica on October 21. Mr. Reid received the award at the National Honors and Awards ceremony at the King’s House, the official residence of the Governor General Sir Patrick Allen in Kingston. The National Honours and Awards recognise those Jamaicans or foreign nationals who, by their service, have made a meaningful and significant contribution to national development.

Mr. Reid has lived with HIV for over 21 years and has significantly contributed to the Jamaican HIV response for nearly two decades. He was awarded in HIV/AIDS Leadership Advocacy in 2008 by the National HIV/STI Programme, and in 2009, Mr. Reid was honoured by the National AIDS Committee for Outstanding Leadership in response to HIV and AIDS in the Persons Living with HIV and AIDS sector. Mr Reid previously founded the Jamaican Network of Seropositives—Jamaica’s first national advocacy organization for people living with HIV.

Mr. Reid currently serves as the GIPA national response coordinator with responsibility for creating and implementing the national capacity building programme for people living with HIV under the National Family Planning Board’s Sexual Reproductive Health Authority as part of the Ministry of Health. Mr. Reid is also a trustee of the Jamaica Business Council on HIV/AIDS, representing people living with HIV to mobilize resources for a sustained national response to HIV/AIDS.

HPP Jamaica supports the coordination of in-country partners to strengthen national policy, advocacy, and capacity for reducing gender-based violence (GBV) and stigma and discrimination related to HIV. In doing so, the program seeks to reduce the spread of HIV and improve access to HIV and reproductive health programs and services.
