ABUJA, Nigeria—On July 23, 2015, the USAID-funded Health Policy Project (HPP)/Nigeria convened a half-day knowledge-sharing forum entitled, “Evidence for Family Planning: Strengthening Advocacy, Decision Making, and Accountability in Nigeria.” Celebrating five years of work, the forum served as an opportunity to highlight partner accomplishments in evidence creation and use, and to articulate a way forward for family planning (FP) policy, programs, and funding in Nigeria. More than 70 FP stakeholders attended the forum.
Delivering opening remarks on behalf of USAID, Dr. Joseph Monehin—senior program manager for integrated health—offered insights on why strong, high-quality evidence is a powerful tool for motivating action on FP: it is the cornerstone of effective advocacy; it is essential for driving policy action, as well informing institutional decision making; and it is the foundation of institutional accountability.
Dr. Kayode Afolabi, head of the Division of Reproductive Health at the Federal Ministry of Health, chaired the forum’s first session, comprising five partner presentations. Together, these presentations represented the full spectrum of evidence creation and use in Nigeria, as supported by HPP.
The day concluded with a high-level panel discussion, “FP in Nigeria: the Path Forward,” which explored the challenges Nigeria must overcome to fully realize its FP2020 and FP Blueprint commitments. Moderated by Dr. Emmanuel Otolorin, Jhpiego country director, panelists highlighted the need for closer engagement of the media on FP matters—key partnerships and modalities for disseminating information on Nigeria’s goals and holding stakeholders accountable. Panelists also stressed the importance of adopting strong Costed Implementation Plans (CIPs) in all Nigerian states, which serve as social contracts for government, private sector agencies, donors, and implementing partners.
