World AIDS Day 2013: Vice-President of Ghana Oversees Launch of New System to Address HIV-related Discrimination: Posted December 3, 2013 WA, Ghana–HIV-related stigma and discrimination remains a serious challenge in Ghana. Now, those experiencing discrimination in Ghana can turn to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for help. At World AIDS Day events in Wa, Ghana on December 2nd, H.E. Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, Vice-President of Ghana, oversaw the launch of a new web-based system for handling cases of HIV-related discrimination. The new web-based system, managed by CHRAJ and found athttp ://drsystem.chrajghana.com/, is designed to improve access to justice for people living with HIV and key populations at higher risk of HIV. Jamaican HIV Activist Ainsley Reid Awarded National Badge of Honor: Posted October 23, 2013 Ainsley Reid, national response coordinator for the Greater Involvement of People living with AIDS (GIPA) National Capacity Building Program, a group supported by the USAID-funded Health Policy Project (HPP), was awarded the badge of honour for meritorial service for his work preventing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV in Jamaica on October 21. Mr. Reid received the award at the National Honours and Awards ceremony at the King’s House, the official residence of the Governor General Sir Patrick Allen in Kingston. The National Honours and Awards recognise those Jamaicans or foreign nationals who, by their service, have made a meaningful and significant contribution to national development. [ more ]
Coming Forward and Speaking Out: Overcoming Adversity While Living with HIV in Jamaica: Posted October 18, 2013 KINGSTON, Jamaica –Jennifer is a confident, poised beautician and the mother of four children, whom she supports. She has been HIV positive for 12 years. She lives in an environment where prevailing attitudes and discrimination toward HIV-positive people undermine access to treatment and care, in part because of the prevalence of stigma. Stigma and discrimination based on HIV status present a real threat for Jennifer as well as countless others living with HIV in Jamaica. Even walking down the street with someone known to be HIV-positive can subject a person to harm. “I’ve seen peers get burnt out of their house,” says Jennifer. [ more ]
Kenya Adopts New Cost-Effective Algorithms to Expand HIV Testing Coverage: Posted October 15, 2013 NAIROBI, Kenya–HIV testing and counseling (HTC) services have long been a keystone of HIV programming worldwide, enabling individuals to learn their HIV status, seek treatment and care if needed, and develop a personal prevention program, goals that support the broader public health objective of lowering the rate of HIV transmission. HTC is a critical element of Kenya’s HIV/AIDS response and is integrated into all HIV interventions. [ more ]
Administrator for Global Health at USAID visits Guatemala/HPP: Posted September 26, 2013 CHICHICASTENANGO, Guatemala–Dr. Ariel Pablos-Méndez, Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID and a six-person delegation from USAID’s Guatemala Mission traveled on September 12 to Chichicastenango in the department of Quiché to meet with groups that receive USAID support for health, nutrition and education programs. More than 20 civil society leaders braved washed out highways and mudslides to participate in the two-hour meeting. These women and men represented civil society alliances and networks that the Health and Education Policy Project (HEPP) partners with. [ more ]
Health Policy Project’s Work on Family Planning Represented at IUSSP: Posted August 29, 2013 BUSAN, South Korea–From August 26 through August 31st 2013 nearly 2,500 health researchers and practitioners from around the globe convened at the XXVII International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) International Population Conference in Busan, Korea. Among those in attendance were Scott Moreland (MEASURE Evaluation project), Karen Hardee (HPP) and Elizabeth McDavid (Futures Group/GRM) who were representing Futures Group’s work at the conference. Staff participated in three different sessions where they presented on the range and depth of Futures Group’s population-based work. [ more ]
