The Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office, an implementing partner of the Health Policy Project, recently organized the Regional Meeting of the Southern and Eastern African Parliamentary Alliance of Committees of Health (SEAPACOH). The workshop, held on September 27-29, 2011, in Kampala, Uganda, brought together members of Parliamentary committees responsible for health from 18 countries and regional bodies in an effort to reposition family planning and reproductive health in Africa. Key stakeholders from civil society and regional partners also attended the meeting to exchange information, facilitate policy dialogue, and identify concrete actions to advance health equity and sexual and reproductive health in the region.

Parliamentarians also renewed the commitment to generate political will and financial support to strengthen health systems in their countries. In doing so, they reinforced their dedication to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, as well as meeting the objectives put forth in the Maputo Plan of Action and the Accra Agenda for Aid Effectiveness.

Participants were drawn from Parliaments of Botswana, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the East African Legislative Assembly.
