WASHINGTON, DC—On Thursday, September 10, the Health Policy Project (HPP) gender team hosted an interactive end-of-project event at the USAID Global Health Bureau office in Crystal City, Virginia. “Policy Tools and Approaches for Advancing Gender Equality: HPP Experiences and Lessons Learned,” offered an opportunity to examine methods developed and applied under HPP for promoting gender equality in family planning, HIV, maternal and child health, and gender-based violence policies and programs.

The two-hour event kicked off with a discussion about how HPP gender activities have supported policy, advocacy, governance, and finance. HPP and USAID staff shared their experiences and inputs, generating thoughtful discussion among all the participants. Participatory roundtable discussions followed, which allowed for in-depth exploration of issues and approaches in improving transgender health; applying innovative GBV tools to support advocacy efforts; addressing gender in policy and governance; and scaling up gender programming. Closing the event, a forward-thinking discussion focused on how donors and country stakeholders can continue to support and advance gender equity in health policy and programs.
